Do my service vans need an ELD?

Accepted Answer

Most don't. A van rated 10,000 lb or less isn't covered. A heavier truck that stays within 150 miles of the shop and is done within 14 hours usually falls under the local-driving exemption. Check the weight sticker in each door jamb.

Do non-CDL drivers need an ELD?

Accepted Answer

Not if they stay local. A driver whose truck needs no CDL keeps no log within 150 miles of the shop, as the crow flies, when they return there each day. They can't drive after the 14th hour on duty, or the 16th on 2 days a week. In TenTrucks, mark them non-CDL and set logs to Not required.

Do local drivers need an ELD?

Usually not. Drivers who stay within 150 miles of the shop and are released within 14 hours keep time records instead of logs. Days outside those limits need a log, and more than 8 such days in any 30 means an ELD. TenTrucks lets you switch one tech to ELD without touching anyone else.

Can some techs keep logs and others not, in the same account?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You set each person to ELD, electronic logbook or Not required. Change it when someone's vehicle or work changes.

Does TenTrucks track local-exemption days for me?

Accepted Answer

No. It doesn't measure the 150-mile radius or switch a driver to logs when a day breaks the exemption. Review who logs whenever routes or vehicles change.

Can I see how long a tech spent at a job?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Draw a circle around the site and open the dwell time report. It measures the vehicle, so a tech who parks down the block won't count as on site.

Are telecom and broadband techs exempt from hours of service?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. Utility service vehicles are outside the hours rules. That includes broadband and cellular work, as long as the vehicle works on those lines and stays mostly inside the service area.
