How it works

How an ELD device works.

The device reads the truck's engine: when the wheels move, how far the truck went and how long the engine ran. The app on the driver's phone turns that into hours-of-service logs, so nobody fills in a paper grid.

  • Switch the driver to Driving when the truck moves, automatically
  • Count down driving, workday, break and weekly hours
  • Keep logging with no cell signal, even in airplane mode

Installation

How to install an ELD in your truck.

No mechanic needed. Tell us the truck's year, make and model before you order. We confirm which port it has and which cable you need, so the device simply plugs in under the dash.

  • Plug the cable into the truck's diagnostic port
  • Pair it with the TenTrucks app over Bluetooth
  • Call 24/7 support if anything doesn't connect
Portable ELD

A portable ELD on the driver's phone or tablet.

FMCSA allows a phone or tablet as the ELD screen when it's connected to a device on the engine and mounted where the driver can see it. Bring your own; there's no special screen to buy.

  • Keep the phone or tablet in a dash mount while driving
  • Lock the screen to your logs for an officer with a PIN
  • Send the official log file to FMCSA by web or email

GPS tracking

One device, more than logs.

The same device that keeps the logs puts the truck on a live map and counts miles in each state, so you don't need a second tracker.

  • See every truck on a live map, updated every 15 seconds
  • Build IFTA reports from GPS miles by state
  • Turn a check-engine fault code into a repair order

Which ELD cable does your truck need?

Look under the dash on the driver's side, near the steering column. The shape of the port tells you which cable to order with your device.

What FMCSA expects from your ELD device

Owning the device is only part of it. These are the federal rules that come with it.

RuleWhat it means for you
The ELD must be on FMCSA's registered listCheck the list before you buy. TenTrucks is registered.
The ELD must connect to the truck's engineA phone app alone isn't an ELD; it needs a device on the engine.
A phone or tablet must be mounted while drivingKeep it in a fixed mount, visible from the driver's seat.
Keep the ELD papers in the truckA user manual, data transfer steps, malfunction steps and 8 days of blank paper logs.
If the ELD fails, switch to paperNote the problem, tell the carrier within 24 hours and rebuild the last 8 days on paper.
The carrier fixes or replaces it within 8 daysCall us and we'll help you get running again.
Trucks built before model year 2000 are exemptCheck the model year in the VIN.

General federal rules, not legal advice. Your state may add its own.

What the TenTrucks device doesn't do

It doesn't have its own screen; the driver's phone or tablet is the screen. It doesn't send logs by USB cable or Bluetooth to the officer either. It sends by web or email, which the rules allow, and the officer can always read the screen.

Each truck needs its own device, because the logs come from that truck's engine. See ELD pricing: $29 per truck per month, with the device free on a 1-year contract, or $129 to buy it.
